Snowball by Zoe Davis
I wish all arguments
Could be settled
In the form of a snowball fight.
Land a good blow and it stings
Then shatters
And I am laughing still
As I frigidly return the sentiment,
Eyes glinting in mischief rather than rage
With no point to make other than exhausted laughter
Fingers burning as you scream
“No more!”
Frosty betrayal slapping you clean in the face
The cheek of it!
Lunging like a fencer
Through mud
Aha! Touché! Have at ye!
Too close for effective combat
Frantically sign for a truce
Mittens bouncing on a string
Shaking powdered disagreement from our bodies
Ice-slicked words a blizzard as declarations are made of
Blankets and Warm Cocoa and
Us
By the Fire.
I wish all arguments
Could be settled
In the form of a snowball fight.
But you snuck a rock
in yours.
“I just don’t know what it is with this one. It was one I liked and then didn’t like and then liked again, so submitted it – got rejected- and then I convinced myself it was awful. It’s seasonal and a bit moody, and I think the lines are too long. Not sure what the message is here, except don’t throw things at people with rocks in them. It’s not nice. Oh, and capitalising random words clearly has a deeper meaning. *rolls eyes at self*”
