I Am by Adilia Jerez

I am the hands of a hard-working woman, A mix of song, dance and letters of her father

Tears of a generation, migration of the mother land

I am the past and the future--- love

The blessing of every morning before school

The sounds of the waves crashing at night

The beat of a heart saying goodbye once again

I am red beans and rice

Salsa, sometimes sweet, sometimes spicy

I am the mix of the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean

I am the r rolling off my tongue

I am

“This poem never saw the light of day for different reasons. I’ve been out of the writing universe for quite some time and didn’t think any of it could survive out in the world, like they’re owner. However, life has given me another chance and here they are!”

Adilia is a Canadian born poet, daughter of Nicaraguan parents. Her mother is a cook, and her father a writer. She was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, and lived there for most her life, with her mother and her family. Adilia is the older sister to two brothers. She moved back to Montreal to study writing, at Concordia University, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature. She did not continue writing, as God had other plans. She became a mother to her one and only daughter, Ava. She has been dedicating her life to working and being a mother. She spends most her days in the routine Ferris wheel, and most her nights, scribbling words on a piece of paper, hoping to make something out of it all.
